What is Bioplasty?

Bioplasty is the name that some experts give to filling with PMMA, a material that fills volumes of tissue, used by some in fills that alter some body shapes. It is called a plastic surgery without a scalpel, but in fact it is only a filling and is therefore considered an aesthetic treatment.

PMMA, or polymethylmethacrylate, is a product that is used to fill volumes lost over time. The procedure is like an uncut plastic, acting on grooves and wrinkles formed by time.

PMMA was discovered in Germany in 1902 by chemist Otto Röhm. However, it was first used by the health area in 1936, when dental prostheses began to take advantage of the procedure. Recently, in 1989, Polymethylmethacrylate began to be used from injections, becoming suitable for medical treatment.

Patients may seek PMMA for both face and body changes. The treatment can be used to fill wrinkles and dark circles, face cheek implants, lip augmentation, gluteal bioplasty and also for patients with HIV who have lipodystrophy (loss of muscular volume) and men with Poland Syndrome.

The implant uses polymethylmethacrylate microspheres around 40 microns in diameter, suspended in a chemically and biologically inert colloid, composed basically of carboxymethylcellulose, promoting definitive changes in the patient's appearance.

Usually, the application lasts between 40 and 60 minutes. In the procedure, local anesthesia is used, allowing the patient to stay awake during treatment.

After completion, the patient can usually resume normal activities on the same day. The doctor may also prescribe analgesics, cold packs, and anti-inflammatories in the days following the session.

Bioplasty Indications

PMMA has the effect of filling certain regions on the face or body. Therefore, many specialists perform it in fills, mainly in the face, because the method allows to change the region of the cheek apples (malar and zygomatic region), chin, wrinkles and contour of the jaw, making it more delimited and accentuated. It can also be applied to buttocks and calves, but the application of large quantities is controversial due to the potential for complications.
